Kaprun is a town located at the foot of the famous Kitzsteinhorn glacier (3203 m a.s.l.). It was the first glacier in all of Austria on which a ski resort was built. Kaprun, together with the town of Zell am See, only 7 km away, form the iconic Europa Sportregion ski area, which runs along the peaks of Schmittenhohe (2,000 m a.s.l.), Maiskogel (1,675 m a.s.l.) and the aforementioned Kitzsteinhorn (3203 m a.s.l.). The region has a total of over 130 km of pistes and 50 lifts. Since 2019, the Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn resorts are connected by a modern 3-S railway called the 3K Kitzsteinhorn K-onnection.
